Traffic Monitoring

Existing traffic monitoring technologies rely on a detailed examination of every packet. This approach often fails because a switch provides no central location to examine packets. Even if all the packets could be examined, the packet rate through switches can reach rates of a billion packets per second or more, far exceeding the processing capacity of existing traffic monitors.

This is why it has become very costly, and in many cases impossible, to collect detailed network traffic data of L2-L7 network flows without impacting the performance of the network infrastructure.

Calyx has the breakthrough technology needed to monitor traffic through switches with an emerging, multi-vendor standard solution specifically designed to provide network-wide, continuous monitoring in high-speed switched environments. It is lightweight enough to embed in every switch port, from layer 2 departmental switches through to core BGP routing switches and scalable enough to provide continuous, real-time traffic monitoring of tens of thousands of ports at 10 gigabit speeds.

Our traffic monitoring technology combines accurate packet counters with statistical sampling of forwarded packets and the associated routing and bridging information. The sampled data is immediately sent to a central data collector for analysis. This analysis results in a rich collection of information including inter-AS traffic, inter-VLAN traffic, network-wide traffic matrices for L2-L7 and usage-based accounting.
